I direct to work with diverse voices in collaboration on creating all-encompassing encounters in the theater that encourage audiences to resist passive consumption and consensually participate in the experience.
I find new ways to bring audiences into their learning zone by using music, dance, imagery, tactical experiences, and language, creating a forum for voices not traditionally amplified in American theater. I challenge traditional notions of “type” that reinforces patriarchal standards as these have been used for so long as ways to exclude Black people, Indigenous People, People of Color, Queer People, People with Disabilities, an so many more; inviting these communities to the table only when the piece is exploiting the very reason the community has been excluded in the first place. I work with styles and genres I love as well as explore new ones. I create theater I want to see, full of topics close to my heart; I do work I believe in. - Juztine Tuazon-Martin (ze/zir/zirs) |
